On pre-termios systems it probably turned all the terminal modes off.
Including echo, nl->cr translation, and a few others that are somewhat
helpful.  However, on my machine "man stty" says:

>> stty [-F DEVICE] [--file=DEVICE] [SETTING]...

>> The underlying system defines which settings are available.

So in any case the joke is not portable :)
