Nick,

I just fumbled through setting up simple authentication on 1.3.  I 
assume you've looked here...

...and have all the basic goodies; .htaccess (or httpd.conf <Directory> 
equiv.), an htdigest password file, etc.  Are you getting a challenge 
from the browesr or just a failure?
