every machine should have a firewall
since PCBSD is based off of FreeBSD, it is most likely secure enough for
your needs ... but it couldnt hurt to have a firewall
I used ipfw when I started with FreeBSD and I found it easy enough to
create firewall rules
since my starting to use OpenBSD I have used pf (which is in FreeBSD)
but I would suggest against it for a beginner
seeing as PCBSD is geared toward the GUI user, I would imagine there is
a firewall configuration tool available to aid in rule generation
in fact, I remember seeing one that generated pf (and other firewall)
rules... I like my hand typed rules though
