I meant to make tonight's meeting and lost track of time. Next one or soon, hopefully. Meanwhile: I have a new machine but only some old 5.2 disks. I lack a CD burner with which to create my own 5.3 disks and operate on a slim enough budget that it will be a while before I can buy some. The hard part is that while 5.2 boots and installs on this machine, it fails to recognize both the built-in NIC and the built-in COM1 serial port. Rumor has it that 5.3 groks this machine (a dell server) just fine, but since 5.2 leaves this machine with no way to connect to a network, I can't get there from here. (This machine also lacks a floppy drive.) So my question is: is there anyone on this list w/in walking distance of Berkeley Bowl who has a 5.3 installation CD I could borrow for a day? Just the first disk, though. When do you want them? "Beggers can't be choosers." :-) If you're in the neighborhood, we can meet at your convenience to borrow the 5.3 disk. If you want to hoof it over here, I can serve coffee or something -- contact me off-list. I'm quite close to Berkeley Bowl and frequent it, well, frequently -- so that's also a good rendezvous point. Assuming 5.3 can grok my NIC I can go from there over the net (1st disk is sufficient). If it can't grok my NIC, i'm not sure what to do next. (The freebsd support list has reports that 5.3 can grok the network interface on this machine (a "Dell PowerEdge SC420").) -t From mp at rawbw.com Fri May 6 14:29:02 2005 From: mp at rawbw.com (Michael Paoli) Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 14:29:02 -0700 Subject: [buug] BUUG list error(s)? Message-ID: <1115414942.427be19ece4d0@webmail.rawbw.com> We did get a report yesterday at the BUUG meeting of error(s) that had apparently occurred with the BUUG list or web site (looked to be a CGI or URL error of some type if I recall correctly). I'm not spotting anything obviously wrong with the web site or list at this time - I did also subscribe and unsubscribe an alternate address of mine, and that seemed to function fine. Perhaps it was just some issue/error of relatively short duration? Or perhaps the error only shows up under certain conditions (e.g. specific steps followed with certain data in a particular order). Anyway, let us know if errors persist (particularly if they're reproducible, and with information on how to reproduce the error(s)). Bit of a chicken and egg thing but I usually find the handiest way to quickly locate such, is by searching on several relevant LUGs, e.g.: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=balug+svlug+eblug+penlug+buug&btnG=Search I typically also find tossing in one that's relatively LINUX related, but not exclusively LINUX (e.g. BUUG or a BSD group) thins the search results in a manner that's often quite useful. Among the various lists and such, this one looks rather comprehensive and relatively current in its information: http://lists.linuxgazette.net/bale/ From rick at linuxmafia.com Fri May 6 20:13:55 2005 From: rick at linuxmafia.com (Rick Moen) Date: Fri, 6 May 2005 20:13:55 -0700 Subject: [buug] Lists of Bay Area LINUX User Groups In-Reply-To: <1115414953.427be1a943414@webmail.rawbw.com> References: <1115414953.427be1a943414@webmail.rawbw.com> Message-ID: <20050507031355.GE6985@linuxmafia.com> Quoting Michael Paoli (mp at rawbw.com): > Among the various lists and such, this one looks rather comprehensive and > relatively current in its information: > http://lists.linuxgazette.net/bale/ You came up with that peculiar URL because I was playing with Apache configuration at the time. I would like the script to look into one directory and search all the sub folders and files and if it finds a ":" colon character in any of the names that it would replace it with a "_" underscore. Has anybody worked with a similar script that they would be willing to share? Thanks for any help or suggestions. (Check the man page and test it out first to make sure it's not something else with the same name!) If so, you could use for example: find . -print0 |xargs -0 rename ':' '_' The -print0 and -0 use null characters instead of new lines to indicate breaks between filenames and keep xargs from choking on badly named files. It only replaces the first instance in a name, so you might have to run it repeatedly. But Robert's version is probably better: you could easily match regular expressions instead of just straight replacement, it will replace all instances in a filename, and it will work anywhere.
