Open Source provides much of the software infrastructure for many of the world's largest companies and organizations: Merrill Lynch, Google, Pixar, Amazon, the City of New York, and probably you - although you might not know it. Innovative products like Linux, Firefox, and Apache are the market-leaders in their sectors, but there are tens of thousands of Open Source programs, used for just about everything. But the economics of Open Source are non-intuitive: how can you make money by giving software away? Why did IBM de-emphasize AIX, after spending Billions, in favor of Linux, the product of a loose collaboration of programmers that it can never control? How can the world's greatest city trust Open Source to help manage its jails? Bruce Perens will show how Open Source is often the most effective strategy for creating and utilizing new innovation. He will explain the economics of Open Source and how it works for profit-generating companies. His talk will be clear to beginners yet informative even for Open Source pros. About BALUG: BALUG is lively gathering of Linux users & free software enthusiasts that combines great food, community & intimate access to featured speakers. We meet in the bar of the Four Seas Restaurant from 6:30pm. At 7pm, we share a family-style Chinese dinner, which is followed by our guest speaker. BALUG Mailing list Policy: BALUG promises not to abuse other LUGs mailing lists. Our current policy is to make one monthly announcement on other Bay Area LUGs mailing lists. If you feel this is not appropriate for a particular list, please tell us which list and what you feel would be a more appropriate policy for that list. LugRadio Live has developed a strong reputation for providing a range of topics about free software, Open Source, digital rights, technology and more, a compelling list of speakers, exhibitors and birds of a feather sessions, and wrapping it all in a unique, fun, loose, social and inclusive event, which is often described as combining the atmosphere of a rock concert and a computer conference. At LugRadio Live USA 2008 we plan on bring this unique atmosphere to the USA, and inviting around 30 speakers, over 20 exhibitors, an eclectic range of BOF sessions, and plenty of additional sessions such as our debate discussion panel, a showcase of five minute talks, tech demos, and of course a live recording of LugRadio in front of an audience. We expect around 500 - 700 attendees to the event. LugRadio Live in the UK has developed a strong reputation for being 'the' community event in the UK, and we are looking to bring this to USA. Obviously as a community event we'd like the local Linux community involved which means you! Take a look at http://lugradio.org/live/USA2008/ for more details and if you fancy speaking, or running a BOF session get in touch at show at lugradio.org Alternatively if you just want to come along and enjoy the show we'd love to see you there and there will be a pre-event party on the Friday night and a main party on the Saturday night to which all attendees are of course invited. Let's take a look at their own words, from the press release. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2008/feb08/02-21ExpandInteroperabilityPR.mspx > - Microsoft is providing a covenant not to sue open source developers > for development or non-commercial distribution of implementations of > these protocols. These developers will be able to use the > documentation for free to develop products. Companies that engage in > commercial distribution of these protocol implementations will be able > to obtain a patent license from Microsoft, as will enterprises that > obtain these implementations from a distributor that does not have > such a patent license." "Non-commercial distribution" is meaningless in terms of Open Source: by definition distribution terms must not discriminate based on field of endeavor. Microsoft have made announcements like these in the past, and they typically appear to be PR chaff for anti-trust suits and feel-good buzzword ticklists. I remember people asking me why I didn't just switch to Apple because "Apple has the Open Source now, so you don't need to keep using Linux". This kind of "look at who we're standing next to" PR is pretty common, and not worth getting excited about. That said, Microsoft *has* been taking some acceptable steps with regard to documentation release. The recent SAMBA settlement was a pretty big move, and I hope it all plays out properly. -- "There should be a homonym exam before people are Nick Moffitt issued keyboards." -- George Moffitt nick at zork.net From Michael.Paoli at cal.berkeley.edu Thu Feb 21 13:24:51 2008 From: Michael.Paoli at cal.berkeley.edu (Michael Paoli) Date: Thu, 21 Feb 2008 13:24:51 -0800 Subject: [buug] Solaris 9 SPARC disk "mystery" (what's using those disks?) Message-ID: <1203629091.47bdec23d5bae@webmail.rawbw.com> Solaris 9 SPARC disk "mystery" (what's using those disks?) Bumped into this "mystery" a while ago. Still don't have "the answer" yet ... but haven't exactly spent lots of time trying to track down the answer either. Anyway, at least at the time (those two days or so) it certainly did stump me and my (few - a rather small team) co-workers. Curious if someone has "the answer" or ideas that may point that way. The system is actively used in/for production, so it's not like we can tear it down or shut it down any time we might want to run various tests on it ... but we can do safe non-destructive tests that can be run in normal multi-user mode operation. Below is some of the communications and background on the "mystery" (redacted and reformatted slightly), and with a bit of epilog notes added at the end: ______________________________________________ From: Michael Paoli Sent: Thursday, January 17, 2008 12:20 AM To: Subject: RE: - c8 disk I/O "mystery" (what's using them?) Ah, ... swap, forgot to check that, ... but alas, nothing there from the c8 disks either. Maybe I'll let it percolate in our brains a bit longer, then start asking around some more. On Linux, fuser is somewhat different in behavior. from fuser(1) on LINUX, (e.g. Red Hat) we have: " -m name specifies a file on a mounted file system or a block device that is mounted. All processes accessing files on that file sys- tem are listed. If a directory file is specified, it is auto- matically changed to name/. to use any file system that might be mounted on that directory. " ... just one of those few zillion "*nix is *nix" (yeah, right) details to help continue to ensure job market for skilled, experienced *nix folks - especially multi-platform/flavor folks. The typical Linux fuser(1) has (at least?) that as a (comparative) downside, ... but it's got its upsides too, e.g. stuff like: # fuser -n tcp 80 can be quite handy ... don't have anything quite like that with UNIX (though it can probably be done via lsof ... if one has that compiled and installed - so, does lsof come with the operating system ... depends what *nix operating system). ZFS had also crossed my mind but that didn't come out until Solaris 10 - and even then it wasn't production release with the first general availability release of Solaris 10. So, ... thus far, ... still a bit of a mystery (and Sun didn't release dtrace until Solaris 10). And something continues to actively use at least one of the two c8 disks: # iostat -n -D -l 2 ssd6 ssd7 5 9999 c8t2d1 c8t2d0 rps wps util rps wps util 129 67 28.0 0 0 0.0 52 2 19.0 0 0 0.0 53 2 19.3 0 0 0.0 ... Peeking at the partition table, and some disk data contents, it seems likely it is or was configured under Veritas Volume Manager - at least at some point in time. Maybe there's some multi-pathing going on that isn't immediately obvious. _____________________________________________ From: Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 5:58 PM To: Michael Paoli Subject: RE: Sounds worthy of posting in a Solaris newsgroup. I'm wondering if there might have been some swap active on the c8 disks? Alas, fuser /dev/sda1 and lsof /dev/sda1 doesn't return anything on Linux either even when the device is mounted as /. Perhaps it's not the content of the disks that the OS and running processes care about but rather the noisy state of the fiber connection might be causing the FC driver the retry way too often? I'd love to know how this mystery ends. : ) _____________________________________________ From: Michael Paoli Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 4:43 PM To: Subject: RE: The server is . An instresting remaining (thus far) mystery is: And what is using the c8 disks? Solaris 9 SPARC c8 disks neither in /etc/vfstab nor output of mount -p c8 disks neither in output of vxdisk list nor output of vxprint -thf c8 disks not in output of metastat fuser shows nothing on the /dev/*dsk/c2* disks/slices DBAs claim no use of raw disk devices (and disk devices have customary ownerships and permissions - nothing owned by oracle or the like) But once the c8 disks were accessible again, the system - and database - all seems much happier again And in /var/adm/messages - only a total of about 25 lines related to errors from the c8 disk devices - which seems rather low to me if something was trying to access them until the were accessible again. And when they became accessible again, nothing to /var/adm/messages noting the change (e.g. no reconnect/renegotation/FC/WWID/LUN/etc. messages at all). And the fibre link lights never went out - but some gentle laying on of hands on the fibre cables regained us access to the fibre attached c8 drives. _____________________________________________ From: Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 11:18 AM To: Michael Paoli; Cc: NOC Subject: RE: oracle on uses veritas qio for file access. _____________________________________________ From: Michael Paoli Sent: Wednesday, January 16, 2008 12:16 PM To: Cc: NOC Subject: RE: Not quite yet ... still trying to detemine what the system is using those disks for - apparently not used directly for filesystem or via Solaris Volume Manager or Veritas Volume Manager. We were wondering whether Berkeley UUG would be interested in having an exhibition stand at the event this year? Exhibitor space is free; we don't charge, because LugRadio Live is a community event. The focus is on people having a great time, not in making money :-) We'd like it if your exhibition stand could be something fun and interactive, rather than just a table with leaflets and advertising. Another thing: as part of the event, we provide each attendee with a registration bag, containing some free items from different organisations. We try to keep the items in this bag as interesting as possible, and in the past this has included pens, badges, software, clothing and more. If you'd like to contribute something to the bag this year for LugRadio Live USA 2008, we'd be happy to include it. Both the goodie bag and an exhibition stand are excellent ways for you to be associated with a strongly community and Open Source focused event, and the demographic it attracts. For the bag, we will need 500 of whatever you choose to contribute, and all you need to do is ship them to us, there is no charge in addition to sending the items - we will add them to the bags ready for the event. LugRadio Live in the UK has developed a strong reputation for being 'the' community event in the UK, and we are looking to bring this to USA. We would love if you could be one of the organisations who helped make this happen. :) If you're not the right person to ask about attending, we'd be grateful if you could either pass it on to the right person for us or get back in touch to let us know who to contact. You can check who is speaking and how the event is shaping up by checking http://lugradio.org/live/USA2008/ Any questions or queries, feel free to drop us an email in reply to this email, and we really hope you can be a part of the event. :) Thanks!
