Read 'em here: http://tinyurl.com/5dstzx The modem is $30 at amazon (plus shipping, plus tax), while on eBay, it's only $25 total...but I'm posting the Amazon URL, 'cause of the reviews. Does anyone in this group know of any other highly rated but inexpensive USB modems, that I should consider? I'm talking under $40, please! Yes, so my Asus Eee PC 1000HA arrived five days ago, and I'm having a ball. Going to the Berkeley Library and comfy coffeehouses w/free wifi...this is most enjoyable. But alas, once home I'm back to 56kbps access! Rather than network my subnotebook w/my desktop, I just want to get rid of that ol' box...and that is why I need an external modem, 'cause the box uses a cheap Windoze-only PCI card. But I'll keep some parts: I plan to convert my DVD-RW drive to a USB external, once the case I ordered arrives...that cost $21 total (eBay again, wheee!). Too bulky to port, of course, but it will serve its purpose at home for the nonce. Eventually, I'll acquire a mini-DVD drive. I could also do same for Drives 0 and 1, though considering their diminutive sizes (80gb and 20gb resepctively), I don't see what purpose I'd put them through. I know, backing up, but: I'm now using an 8gb SDHD card to back up my data...got it for $19 total at eBay. My data to date :b is a mere 2.2gb, so it'll be a long time I'll need bigger backup. Once I scour both HD's, if anyone here wants 'em, give a holler...the price is right ($000.00). Still waiting on delivery of the Ubuntu-loaded USB stick, so I doubt I'll have it in time for this Thurs.'s meet. I'm wondering now, if I should have Ubunto loaded on the SD card instead? I love the idea of the card's being flush w/the netbook's edge, as opposed to a memory stick jutting out. I could use the stick for backing up, instead. Well, I know I've come to the right people, 'cause I'll probably need assistance installing Ubuntu to the card. But first, I'll see what I can dig up on the web. I might even chose a different Linux flavor. Hey, I visited Au Coquelet to discover: NO free wifi! :( Maybe you guys bring your own booster w/wireless router? Then again, maybe i-access would be a distraction from meatspace badinage! Oh, almost forgot: I invite everyone to view my latest blog entry, which is all about my Asus netbook: Big Plans For A Tiny PC http://ezekielk.tblog.com/post/1970026749 See some of you BUUGS Thursday! I'm still waiting on the arrival of a USB flash drive eeeUbunto all the way from hacker-rich Israel. Wait'll I get my grubby little geek hands on it! You do know don't you, that you can tweak Xandros for full desktop mode. The factory sets it up in "easy" mode. See: Eee PC Tips: A crash course in Linux http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/11/06/eee-pc-tips-a-crash-course-in-linux/ Xandros impresses me as very user-friendly for non-PCnerds: the GUI is crisp, elegant, and inviting! So much NOT like Windoze. And pretty much everything you'd want to do on the 'net is set up and ready to go. VERY low learning curve. I have already turned one person on to purchasing a netbook, who is NOT interested in getting under the hood, so to speak. I would NEVER dream of promoting Windoze netbooks...unless it's a great deal money-wise, and you plan to install Linux...or any other *nix. > I just got a 4GB USB stick (they are on sale for $20 at BestBuy) and > downloaded the ubuntu eeePC distro. I got mine at eBay: Ubuntu 8.04 pre-installed on a USB Bootable Flash Drive. 8 gigs. All for just $20 total. > It took about an hour to install, mostly > unattended. I don't leave the stick installed, just for backup. I would get > an SDram card if I needed more space. I suggest you shop at eBay, you can get an 8GB SDHC card for just $21.38 total. That's what I use for backup. Once my Ubuntu USB stick shows up, I plan to port the OS over to this card, and use the stick for backing up. > I also installed the dropbox client (http://www.getdropbox.com) and it works > great on the ubuntu install. Just checked it out, it's an online storage utitlity, and one is limited to 2GB total, 350mb largest file size. While I don't have a problem w/file size, the 2gb limit is not workable for my needs...for I'm sure my data will total somewhat over 3gb in a few months. For more space, you need to pay dropbox $10/mo. I'm happy with free storage elsewhere, using sync freeware which I'm just looking into. Asus provides 20gb free storage for its netbook customers, and plans to increase that amount to 60gb. There are also other free, product-independent online storage services, such as adrive (50gb!). I didn't include xdrive, as they're shutting down in January. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic, souped-up netbook as you tweak your Ubuntu system to perfection. Which version of eee PC do you own? They're all really cool, I'd be happy with any one of them, even the original 7-inch screen models. Elegant, every single one! What do you use your netbook for...mostly just tweaking? That alone makes it worth more than its monetary price. Also just discovered by yours truly is another "netbook" site, where the author prefers the term "liliputer"...very good material: http://www.liliputing.com/ -- A government is only as good as its operating system. -Zeke Krahlin http://ezekielk.tblog.com From pewterbot9 at gmail.com Fri Nov 7 16:25:22 2008 From: pewterbot9 at gmail.com (Pewter Bot) Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 16:25:22 -0800 Subject: [buug] What a great Thursday night... Is it safe to make a file system on a drive with one partition by using /dev/sda instead of the individual partition? I'm wondering if this is something I should depend on or not. Yes, with many operating systems - including Linux, one can use an entire disk as a single filesystem - in that case you mention, using the disk device, rather than partition device, the disk isn't even partitioned, but the entire disk is used as filesystem ( rather than entire partition). Similar approaches are often commonly used in Linux (and Unix, etc.) ... most notably for systems with large numbers of disks ... but often rather than using each disk device as a filesystem directly, or partitioning it, it may instead be used as an md or LVM device - again using the entire device, no partitioning. Wed. A.M. Message-ID: <20081124144449.172875qcb3n7ac0s@webmail.rawbw.com> FYI, I noticed earlier, about 3 crates/boxes/bags of mostly computer technical books by the curb, out in front of approximately 1820 Carleton St. in Berkeley. Quite a mix of stuff, but I noticed C++, Java, Visual Basic, NT, and quite a number of topics/books (e.g. various certification exame study books too, etc.). ... anyway, mostly various computer technical stuff (languages, applications, operating systems). Most of the stuff looked a bit older (guestimating 3 to 7+ years) ... I didn't look in a whole lot of detail, but the preceeding is my impression/recollection of what I saw at relatively quick glance. If one's interested, I'd guestimate they'd need to be grabbed before sometime Wed. A.M. - as they're likely headed for curbside recycling mixed paper pickup sometime Wed. A.M.
