Well, my USB wifi arrived in the snail-mail today: turns out to be the
RTL8187_Wireless. Certainly does have drivers for Linux distros. Had
to download the driver from Realtek:

It mentions  that "The rtl8187 driver is included in vanilla 2.6.23!"
Not sure what kernel number my eeebuntu runs, but if I can't upgrade
to that, I'll just find another distro that has this latest kernel.
