I picked up a Lite-On bus-powered DVD writer for 80 dollars.  It
automagically shows up as /dev/sr0, /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom on my
Debian Lenny eeepc netbook.  YMMV, but I believe that most modern dvd
adaptors will do the same.
