If you simply want a one pass overwrite of reasonably accessible data at maximum speed: o be sure any BIOS setting or the like which make any part of the disk "hidden" are disabled (tends to be a more common issue for laptops and "desktop" type systems). o determine optimal (or near optimal) block size and device (e.g. block vs. character device - if applicable for your OS flavor) - once you figure that out it typically won't vary much across drive types - at least if you're using similar hardware to do the overwrite/"wipe". o # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/highest_throughput_disk_path \ > bs=highest_throughput_block_size o If your OS flavor doesn't provide /dev/zero, one can use a wee bit of code (e.g. C or perl) to produce an infinite output of ASCII null bytes, and pipe (|) that into dd (and omit the if=/dev/zero). o These can be done in parallel (asynchronous &) - but if one does so, one may want to take proper care to capture exit/return value and any data written to stderr o The above method is relatively fast, and leaves the drives useable (e.g. for resale or donation, etc.). o Rather than being too redundant, continue with further information here: http://linuxmafia.com/pipermail/sf-lug/2008q4/005770.html (same basic stuff applies - essential tradeoffs are thoroughness, time, reusability, convenience, risk/security, etc.) Quoting "Bob Read" : > file under: data destruction. > I need to dd a whole bunch of drives ( ~20/month) of different > types (ide, scsi). > whats the best way to dd them all? > they're sitting in a stack in the corner. For our 2009-09-15 BALUG meeting, we're excited to present: Christian Einfeldt on: Linux in schools: Help yourself by helping the underdog Schools and Linux should really fit together hand-in-hand. Schools need robust, low cost infrastructure, and the Linux community needs more widespread adoption to avoid marginalization on the desktop. Schools offer the potential to become channels for distribution and socialization for Linux. Christian Einfeldt is a community organizer who has worked for more than 5 years to bring Linux to two local public schools, and will draw on this experience to talk about what schools need to go further with Linux, and how schools can help create greater mindshare for Linux. Christian Einfeldt has been using GNU-Linux in his law practice since late 2000. Einfeldt is a relatively simple end user who runs whichever distro is favored by the guru helping him. Currently, that means regular old brown Ubuntu (GNOME), but in the past has included openSUSE (KDE). Einfeldt is also fond of Xubuntu, as it runs quite well and installs easily on dead badgers and other odd ball legacy hardware that he and others are adminning at two local school FOSS projects supported by Bay Area GNUsters and Penguinistas. You know who you are. So, if you'd like to join us please RSVP: rsvp at balug.org **Why RSVP??** Well, don't worry we won't turn you away, but the RSVPs really help the Four Seas Restaurant plan the meal and they help ensure that we'll be able to eat upstairs in the private banquet room. As it turned out, I had an excellent day. Thanks, Michael, for recommending that bicycle path from North Berkeley BART, it was fantastic, and I learned, has a name: "Ohlone Green Way". Would love to live in one of those cottages or apartments with back yard facing the path, how idyllic! I will make a point of frequenting that bicycle path, and ride it further than I did today. I was flummoxed at how *huge* this Solano Stroll Fair was...it was *huge*! The BerkeleyLUG booth has many interested visitor...Jack's idea was a hit! Got to me some very nice folks there, both the volunteers and the stoppers-by. Then--as if the day weren't already nice enough--a light rain fell towards the end of the fair, and I love the rain, riding my bike through the cool wetness was a blissful experience. I decided to stop by Au Coquelot, to use their convenient restroom...and (lo an behold) what sign did I see stuck to their back door? "Free wifi". Yay, that's the cherry on the cupcake of my day. So I lingered over a tall glass of iced tea, and enjoyed the public wifi. Only there's a hitch: apparantly, they using one of those routers that doesn't work so well with my Asus netbook's atheros chipset. Further exploration has pointed the culprit to be the lower cost routers, such as NetGear. Until recently, I was able to get around this, by disabling the internal wifi, and using instead an external USB wifi that is not an Atheros. But this doesn't work now, since I upgraded Eeebuntu from 2.0 to 3.0. Ironically, my newer and smaller 7" screen netbook, works great in those places wjre my 10" one doesn't. Basically, I can't to streaming video or downloading. So I have to adjust my priorities, and bring my 701 to the BUUG meetings, instead of my larger 1000H. In general, though, this problem only occurs in about one out of seven public wifi's I use. Well, now we have wifi at the BUUG, and I suppose I'll be the only one actually using it. I like to download Youtube videos on various topics, and watch them when I'm home...where I still have my humble dialup connection. Congratulations, Joe, on a most successful Linux promotion. And as I said to you before departing: you may have to rent a hall for the next meeting, so many interested people showed up at your booth! -- Zeke K. Just FYI, the atheros wifi label is "ath5k". Lsmod revealed that tidbit, 'cause that's what I suspected was the problem when my first attempt at editing blacklist-local didn't do a derned thing. The goal of celebrating OneWebDay each year is to make visible a global constituency that cares about the future of the Internet. According to Ms. Crawford, ?Earth Day was the model when I founded OneWebDay in 2006. In 1969, one man asked the people to do what their elected representatives would not: take the future of the environment into their own hands. Peoples? lives now are as dependent on the Internet as they are on roads, energy supplies and running water. We can no longer take that for granted, and we must advocate for the Internet politically and support its vitality personally.? Now chaired by Elecronic Frontier Foundation co-founder Mitchell Kapor, OneWebDay is in its fourth year and marked by volunteer-driven efforts in over 35 cities across the country and across the globe. This event marks the inaugural OneWebDay activity on the UC Berkeley campus. Join the Center for New Media and Media Alliance to hear about the growing phenomenon of OneWebDay, celebrate the power of the Web for positive change, and how to take action to protect what is precious about it. Message-ID: I read recently, that Windoze netbook users of systems with a solid state drive (SSD) have been advised to disable swapping. This is because SSD chips wear out sooner from frequent rewrites, of which swapping is the major offender. So I'm thinking about doing something similar in Ubuntu Linux. Only (instead of eliminating it) I'd make the swap partition reside on an SDHC card that I'd keep permanently in its slot. My system has 500M RAM...I could partition, say, 1/4 to 1/2G on an 8G card, using the rest for data storage and transfer. Is this a workable solution to prolong the life of my netbook's SSD (also 8G)? (My 8G SDHC card is a lowly class 2. Should I upgrade to a class 6, or is this overkill?) TIA. -- Think Google's kewl? Good point. Actually, of the two hibernation implementations, I believe only uswsusp needs an active swap partition to write out RAM contents to. The other implementation, suspend2, can save to a file on the HD, instead, which you can programmatically delete when not being needed for hibernation, and create programmatically as needed. And, just now found, here's one suggested way to do the same thing with the default uswusp implementation: http://superuser.com/questions/21020/can-i-hibernate-linux-without-a-swap-partition (Untested, as I don't have a system where I've had to solve this problem.) A completely different approach might be to allocate a regular swap partition, but set the kernel's swappiness parameters such that it doesn't get used for VM despite being known to the swap manager. Much easier to replace the SDHC card. {{ If your netbook has enough RAM for it, maybe you should try turning off swap. }} Well, I stated my RAM to be 500M...and that may be fine for my stand-alone, single-user system. Or, it may not...this may be a borderline situation. Tomorrow, I'll run my little Eee PC 701SD w/Firefox and a few other programs while wifi connected...and see just how much memory is used. But I certainly don't use hibernation; it never works right anyway. And that seems to be the only reason why *some* Linux users claim that swap is necessary, don't get rid of it. They don't always say why, so I wasn't sure they were thinking about hibernation mode. Thanks for your thoughtful replies, Rick and Jon. That would depend entirely on what you choose to run on it. My old iBook 2.2 PowerPC laptop has only 256 MB RAM, and runs Debian without hitting swap, running my usual mix of xterms and a Web browser.[1] (Actually, it's OK in that department even with Xubuntu.) But Your Mileage May Differ. Suggest you get to be buddies with ps, top, vmstat, etc., to see how much RAM you really use. > Tomorrow, I'll run my little Eee PC 701SD w/Firefox and a few other > programs while wifi connected...and see just how much memory is used. No offence intended, but do you know how to do that? "vmstat 1" will do a report on swap activity every second, until you Ctrl-C out of it. The "si" and "so" columns reports data swapped in and swapped out -- in kilobytes by default, I think. On _my_ system in front of me, it registers zeroes all the time, because I'm not hitting swap. Be aware: Even a system that's not actually needing swap will touch it a _little_ from time to time, if it's available and switched on. You'll know the difference (watching vmstat) when you add an additional process and it starts hitting swap for real. You know what's really annoying is that Firefox checks at startup to verify that the GNOME gconfd-2 configuration daemon is running -- even though _Firefox doesn't need gconf_, and isn't supposed to depend on GNOME in any event (which I haven't installed, this being a sparse Debian configuration with Window Maker). If gconfd-2 isn't running, it tries to start the damned thing -- and I can't find any way to turn off that behaviour. I tried replacing /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 with a zero-length file, but then Firefox issues an _error_ at startup complaining that gconf isn't working -- and, again, there's no way to disable that behaviour. After getting tired of seeing that error message, I've put /usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconfd-2 back and let the damned thing run -- but I'm not happy about it. Shouldn't have to. There is a nice gnome GUI equivalent for TOP, called "System Monitor". It will show you how much swap, if any, you're using in a very clear graph and pie chart...same for actual RAM used. As I learned what each of these running processes are, I can continue to eliminate more...as well as uninstall what applications I don't need. Sort of a reverse engineering method. There is also the matter of turning on more people to Linux...for which a generic (and large) package is unavoidable. That is, if one takes seriously the desire to assist Windoze users to become former Windoze users. Even so, a Linux package such as Ubuntu's is far more preferable than a Micro$oft package, for pretty much the same reasons as your preference to start minimally. And should a convert decide to scale down his OS, and have more control over it, Linux is superb for precisely that use. Not to mention the extraordinary community of support that is both global and ubiquitous. I'd say that's a win-win situation for newbies and wizards alike. At this point in my learning curve, I certainly appreciate the good sense of the minimalist approach, and building from there. Which preference shall some day be my own. {{ I'll give that a try, next time I restart Iceweasel (Firefox). }} --Of course I had to look up "Iceweasel" on Wikepedia: "Iceweasel" redirects here. For the GNU browser formerly known as IceWeasel, see GNU IceCat. In 2006, a branding issue developed when Mike Connor, representing the Mozilla Corporation, requested that the Debian Project comply with Mozilla standards for use of the Thunderbird trademark when redistributing the Thunderbird software.[1][2] At issue were modifications not approved by the Mozilla Foundation, when the name for the software remained the same. In 2006 the Debian Project subsequently rebranded the Mozilla Firefox program,[3] and other software released by Mozilla, so that Debian could continue to distribute the software with modifications permitted, without being bound by the use of trademark requirements that the Mozilla Foundation had required. The new names established by Debian were Iceweasel for Mozilla Firefox, Icedove for Mozilla Thunderbird, and Iceape for SeaMonkey. These changes were implemented in the subsequent version of Debian (Etch). In July 2007, Iceowl, a rebranded version of Mozilla Sunbird, was added to the unstable branch of Debian.[4]... Mozilla Foundation owns the trademark "Firefox"[5] and claims the right to deny the use of the name and other trademarks to unofficial builds.[6] Unless distributions use the binaries supplied by Mozilla or else have special permission, they must compile the Firefox source with an option enabled which gives Firefox the codename of the release version of Firefox on which it is based, and which doesn't use the official logo or other artwork.[6] The Debian Free Software Guidelines are used by the Debian project to determine whether a license is a free license, which in turn is used to determine whether something can be included in Debian. As the logo does not meet these requirements, it could not be used by software which was to be included in Debian. This effect of the Mozilla trademark policy led to a long debate within the Debian Project in 2004 and 2005. During this debate, the name "Iceweasel" was coined to refer to rebranded versions of Firefox. The first known use of the name in this context is by Nathanael Nerode[7], in reply to Eric Dorland's suggestion of "Icerabbit".[8] It was intended as a parody of "Firefox".[9] "Iceweasel" was subsequently used as the example name for a rebranded Firefox in the Mozilla Trademark Policy[6], and became the most commonly used name for a hypothetical rebranded version of Firefox. By January 1, 2005, rebranding was being referred to as the "Iceweasel route".[10] --end excerpt And it goes on. Interesting to note that IceWeasel, IceCat, IceDove and IceApe do not appear in the Package Manager (though SeaMonkey does). But here is the home page for Gnuzilla and IceCat: http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/ The "kewlness" factor of Linux keeps growing as I learn! Thanks, Rick, once more. I'll play a bit with my SSD netbook tonight...but I can only do so much w/dialup. Tomorrow, with public wifi, will be the Big Test. -- Think Google's kewl? You still _do_ know how to correctly interpret what top -- or pointy-clicky variants thereof that suffer from undetermined reliability and lack of freedom from dependency issues -- tells you. Anyway, sure, top is one relevant tool. The Debian box in front of me has this, for example: Mem: 2074864k total, 1194224k used, 880640k free, 168352k buffers Swap: 1951888k total, 88k used, 1951800k free, 196864k cached Point is, swap isn't actually within a country mile of being "used" in any real sense, despite that "88k" thing, which really amounts to the swapper thread tapping gently on the swap partition to ensure that it's still there. > I have already noticed that sometimes a small piece of swap being > used, even when plenty of RAM was still avialable. Well, if you ever get tired of wasting RAM and having to chew up SDHC cards pointlessly, consider losing the GNOME bloat. Or, if you don't want to lose the bloat, get some more RAM already. > I assume--and perhaps wrongly--that Linux will automatically find the > swap partition. Hey, it's almost like you bothered to look. ;-> > I am slowly working towards that...have already eliminated certain > daemons I know I don't need...such as the one for bluetooth. As I > learned what each of these running processes are, I can continue to > eliminate more...as well as uninstall what applications I don't need. > Sort of a reverse engineering method. Here's a general method. 1. Run "ps auxw > /tmp/processes". 2. Look at each process snapshotting in /tmp/processes. For each one, consider whether you know why you're running it. If you're not sure, or you know you do _not_ want to run it, figure out how to turn it off. 3. Turn such processes off. By a functional test, if you don't miss them, then you didn't need them. This assumes you are aware enough, and curious enough, about the functioning of your system that you'll be able to determine that particular things might be needed for general machine welfare, even if the lack of them doesn't steal your personal lunch, e.g., the cron daemon. 4. If a given process proves by a functional measure to be not needed, figure out separately how to disable its re-launching at subsequent boot times. 5. Iterate until you've gone through all the processes. Clue: The more baroque the environment you're running when you conduct this exercise, the more involved and time-consuming it becomes to track down what all those obscure processes are. (Thus, in part, earlier point about some advantages to losing GNOME bloat.) You might eventually decide that an environment that autolaunches a huge number of obscure processes you have no interest in running is not your friend, and that there are other ways to run a system. As a minor example of points #3 and 4, consider those six or so "getty" processes in the "ps" output. Upon researching them, you'll find that they're virtual consoles #1 through 6. Scratch your head and ask yourself how often you've needed even as many as two virtual text consoles. On recent Ubuntu releases, this would be controlled at boot time by /etc/event.d/ttyN startup file (N=1 to 6). See: http://www.linux.com/archive/feature/125977 On more-traditional *ixes including most Linuxes, they would be lines in /etc/inittab. > There is also the matter of turning on more people to Linux. Really? I thought this conversation was about your 701SD and dealing with its possible swap issue. If this is going to turn into a discussion about OS-advocacy, let me know so I can ignore the thread.
