Message-ID: <20120426205039.GS1274@weak.org> Hi folks, I've been running the BUUG mailing list off a server in my living room for more than a decade, now. I'm getting ready to go on vacation for the summer, and won't have a living room in which to host the list. I've moved my personal stuff to AWS, but emails now cost me money, so I'm not so keen on hosting the list any more. Any objections to migrating the list to one of the many free list providers, such as Google Groups? -Jon From rick at linuxmafia.com Thu Apr 26 14:21:22 2012 From: rick at linuxmafia.com (Rick Moen) Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2012 14:21:22 -0700 Subject: [buug] Move the list? That would be ideal. If Aaron needs help importing the archived traffic, I can advise. Maybe (hopefully) we can also do wee bit of work on publicly archived web access on the list, and suitable 301 redirect(s), etc., so the list archive material will continue to be quite findable (and relatively nice transference of search engine "link juice" and all that), and likewise preserve (most) user settings, etc. Suggestion - perhaps do a subdomain (list.buug.org or lists.buug.org), so that once the list is moved, if/when ever we might need or want to move it again in future, it would be relatively easy to do so ... and probably then use a list address of buug@ said subdomain. And thanks too, to everyone who's worked on and supported this, currently does so, and/or will be doing so in future! references/excerpts: > From: "Jon McClintock" > Subject: Re: [buug] Move the list? > Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2012 21:36:49 +0000 > On Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 02:21:22PM -0700, Rick Moen wrote: >> Quoting Jon McClintock (jammer at weak.org): >> > > Aaron Porter actually offered to host in on the server that's > hosting buug.org, > since there's apparently mailman already setup on it... > > -Jon From rick at linuxmafia.com Thu Apr 26 15:36:39 2012 From: rick at linuxmafia.com (Rick Moen) Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2012 15:36:39 -0700 Subject: [buug] Move the list? Yeah. I host quite a bit of local UG stuff on the scarily old P3 in my garage, though, and don't want it to become much more of a SPoF risk. > Suggestion - perhaps do a subdomain (list.buug.org or lists.buug.org), Strongly concur. There /is/ a reference to John and Feedle's joke about "safe hex" in one of those chapters...I just don't recall for the nonce. Just thought I'd mention.
