Doing so opens up possibilities which were previously impossible. Open data will do for the Internet what open source did for computing. Jaisen Mathai[2] is the founder of The OpenPhoto Project[1]: an open source, decentralized and federated photo platform. Prior to starting the project Jaisen was an engineer at [3]Yahoo! and before that he co-founded a photo startup. The OpenPhoto Project was accepted into Mozilla[4]'s WebFWD[8] program. Prior to joining WebFWD the project raised $25,000 on Kickstarter[9]. All of the source code is available on Github[10]. Meeting Details... 6:30pm Tuesday, February 21st, 2012 2012-02-21 Four Seas Restaurant http://www.fourseasr.com/ 731 Grant Ave. San Francisco, CA 94108 Easy PARKING: Portsmouth Square Garage at 733 Kearny: http://www.sfpsg.com/ Cost: The meetings are always free, but for dinner, for your gift of $13 cash, we give you a gift of dinner - joining us for a yummy family-style Chinese dinner - tax and tip included (your gift also helps in our patronizing the restaurant venue). ------------------------------ BALUG is proud to announce, for our 2012-03-20 meeting we have: A technical presentation by Vision Solutions[1] on Double-Take Availability for Linux[2]. Double-Take Availability for Linux is a continuous, byte-level replication and failover software product. As it can monitor changes to any data files, it can protect any application - DB or others. The replication is from source to target server. Each server is licensed and has the software installed. Configuration of what data to replicate and what failover parameters are to be used is accomplished by a universal console that can run on any Windows platform - PC, laptop, server, etc. The console doesn't need to run on the servers being protected. Source and target servers can be in the same room or across any geographic distance - over any TCP/IP network. As Availability is considered a high availability product, RPOs are typically in the near-zero range because the data changes are captured and transmitted continuously. RTO (or failover) is typically in the seconds to minutes range. Vision Solutions currently supports most releases of RHEL, Oracle Linux, CentOS, SUSE with the Ext and XFS file systems. These distributions are supported on physical and virtual environments. Here is a short data sheet on the product: http://pdf.visionsolutions.com/pdfs/us-double-take-availability-for-linux.pdf and website has several white papers also: http://www.visionsolutions.com/Popular-Resources/Whitepapers.aspx 1. http://www.visionsolutions.com/ 2. http://www.visionsolutions.com/Products/DT-Avail-Lin.aspx ------------------------------ book(s), CDs, and other "door prizes", etc. Book(s) - from No Starch Press, we received for review: _The Linux Command Line_ A Complete Introduction by William E. I'll have CDs with me: http://www.wiki.balug.org/wiki/doku.php?id=balug:cds_and_images_etc Among other random topics of discussion, I've recently been testing/planning for some Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.9 i386 to Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.4 amd64 "upgrades", along with some xen --> qemu-kvm conversions. For some background on that, have a peek here: http://www.wiki.balug.org/wiki/doku.php?id=system:vicki_debian_lenny_to_squeeze (Also, my "new" personal laptop (new to me 2011-12-15) - I have Debian GNU/Linux 6.0.4 amd64 and qemu-kvm installed on it - so useful platform for also testing various relevant bits to above mentioned "upgrade"). Oooh, book? I'll teasingly bring with me: from No Starch Press, received for review for BALUG ("not" BUUG): _The Linux Command Line_ A Complete Introduction by William E. Shotts, Jr. January 2012, 480 pp. ISBN: 978-1-59327-389-7 http://www.nostarch.com/tlcl.htm BALUG gets first crack at it (received two copies), but if BALUG users don't snatch both of 'em up "fast enough", BUUG may get a shot at it too (or come to the BALUG meeting 2012-02-21, and then one's definitely got a shot at it). references/excerpts: http://lists.balug.org/pipermail/balug-announce-balug.org/2012-February/000182.html http://www.balug.org/#Meetings-upcoming From itz at buug.org Mon Feb 20 13:40:54 2012 From: itz at buug.org (Ian Zimmerman) Date: Mon, 20 Feb 2012 13:40:54 -0800 Subject: [buug] PDF forms Message-ID: <878vjxi3o9.fsf@foolinux.dyndns.org> Is there a completely libre way of filling PDF forms? I installed pdftk which can (among other things) generate a .fdf file from a PDF input file, and also merge a filled-in .fdf file with the original PDF. But .fdf files are binary and not really humanly readable, so I don't know how to fill _those_ in - is there a specialized program for that? pdftk can also input data from .xfdf files which are XML, but it can't generate them :-( -- Ian Zimmerman gpg public key: 1024D/C6FF61AD fingerprint: 66DC D68F 5C1B 4D71 2EE5 BD03 8A00 786C C6FF 61AD Rule 420: All persons more than eight miles high to leave the court.
