Subject: [buug] Heritage of Unix at Berkeley
Message-ID: <5bdc0e7d-c84b-459c-8e55-9cba56fcf51b@email.android.com>
I was just listening to a podcast posted by the Long Now Foundation. [1] Having seen some snapshots of the heritage of UNIX near Berkeley, specifically BSD and Linux, I was thinking of who might be preserving this heritage. It would greatly benefit UCB and the public to share and celebrate the heritage which we all now benefit from every day in ways small and large. I feel like exploring this heritage in a way others might also benefit.
I am neither a documentary filmmaker nor an event planner. Perhaps Stewart Brand can help. However with some strategizing I can imagine an event worthy of significant funding and public interest. I look forward to discussing this idea further with others interested in making something happen.
Regards,
Grant Bowman

Bay Area Linux User Group (BALUG) meeting
TOMORROW Tuesday 6:30 P.M. 2012-11-20
Please RSVP if you're planning to come (see further below).
For our 2012-11-20 BALUG meeting, we theoretically have a
speaker/presentation lined up for this meeting, but I've not received
"final" details or recent confirmation. Regardless, that doesn't
prevent us from having interesting and exciting meetings. Sometimes we
also manage to secure/confirm a speaker too late for us to announce or
fully publicize the speaker (that's happened at least twice in the past
nine or so years). Got questions, answers, and/or opinions? We
typically have some expert(s) and/or relative expert(s) present to
cover LINUX and related topic areas. Want to hear some interesting
discussions on LINUX and other topics? Show up at the meeting, and
feel free to bring an agenda if you wish. Want to help ensure BALUG
has speakers/presentations lined up for future meetings? Help refer
speakers to us and/or volunteer to be one of the speaker coordinators.
Good food, good people, and interesting conversations to be had.
So, if you'd like to join us please RSVP to:
rsvp at balug.org
**Why RSVP??**
Well, don't worry we won't turn you away, but the RSVPs really help
BALUG and the Four Seas Restaurant plan the meal and meeting, and with
sufficient attendance, they also help ensure that we'll be able to eat
upstairs in the private banquet room.

also helps in our patronizing the restaurant venue and helping
to defray BALUG costs such treating our speakers to dinner).

Devin Teske on FreeBSD @ BALUG TOMORROW! Tu 2012-11-20
Sorry I/we didn't have details/confirmation earlier.
Since this isn't strictly a LINUX group, I thought the update
significant enough some would now want to see that on this list.
Here's key updated bits:
Bay Area Linux User Group (BALUG) meeting
TOMORROW Tuesday 6:30 P.M. 2012-11-20 Devin Teske on FreeBSD [updated]
Please RSVP if you're planning to come (see further below).
For our 2012-11-20 BALUG meeting, we are pleased to present:
Devin Teske, FreeBSD[1] "src" developer - join us for an informal
FreeBSD Q&A session, which may include demonstration(s).
Devin Teske is a FreeBSD "src" developer (opposed to "doc", "ports",
etc. the "src" folk maintain the base operating system including the
boot loader, kernel, and all base user land).
What does he do for the FreeBSD project?
o Maintains the boot loader menu
o Maintain sysinstall, bsdinstall, bsdconfig, sysrc, and the
install/configuration aspects in general
What does he use FreeBSD for? At his work, they use FreeBSD as the
platform for a leading check processing system. Customers across the
United States have used FreeBSD since 1995 to process paper payments in
the United States. As early as 2008, our customers had a new choice of
running our software on top of RedHat Enterprise Linux instead of
FreeBSD. In the last year of 2011, Linux helped process $50 BILLION in
payments for 2011, but FreeBSD in the same year processed $1.7 TRILLION
in payments. FreeBSD is still a very large part of the U.S. economy in
this way.

The other earlier details (including RSVP information) are as before,
and may be seen on:
http://buug.org/pipermail/buug/2012-November/003949.html
And yes, he was recently at a BUUG meeting (on 2012-10-18). Never know
who you may meet or encounter at a BUUG meeting. (no agenda for BUUG
meetings, unless perhaps you bring one, whereas BALUG, these things may
typically be a bit more predictable).
